Al cinema, il film è lo stesso. Sei tu che sei diverso.

Quando ci accingiamo a vedere un film, attiviamo, più o meno inconsapevolmente, diverse aspettative, sulla base delle nostre conoscenze, esperienze, convinzioni e atteggiamenti. Queste aspettative, e le reazioni che innescano durante e dopo la visione, sono largamente responsabili dell'opinione che ci facciamo del film, dell'interpretazione che ne diamo, del giudizio che possiamo esprimere sul film stesso. Le aspettative sono un fattore al contempo condiviso e strettamente personale:

-  condiviso, perchè molte altre persone che fanno parte della nostra stessa cultura, o età, o condizione sociale, o professione, o che comunque condividono con noi aspetti importanti della nostra vita, possono tendenzialmente avere un bagaglio di conoscenze ed esperienze simile al nostro; ma nello stesso tempo

- personale, perchè, come esseri umani unici e irripetibili, ognuno di noi è portatore di differenze individuali e di esperienze non sovrapponibili a quelle di nessun altro.

Proviamo a vedere come funzionano questi meccanismi nel concreto. Pensa ad un film che vorresti vedere prossimamente. Nella Scheda che segue, compila, per quanto ti è possibile, la colonna Fattori da considerare. Poi, in base a questi dati, scrivi nella colonna accanto le Aspettative che vengono generate nella tua mente. Ad esempio, se stai per andare a vedere l'ultima commedia di Woody Allen, potrai scrivere nella colonna Aspettative qualcosa come ...  uno o pìù personaggi in "crisi esistenziale", oppure una serie di battute a raffica, o ancora un'ambientazione in una città famosa o ... Per fare un altro esempio, se i tuoi amici ti hanno raccomandato un film e ti hanno detto di cosa parla, potrai riassumere brevemente quello di cui sei già venuto a conoscenza. O ancora, se stai per andare a vedere un film "horror", potrai citare alcuni elementi che ti aspetti di ritrovare: un gruppo di amici progressivamente eliminati da un omicida, scene di tortura, abbondante spargimento di sangue ("splatter"), e così via.

Una volta completata la scheda, e dopo aver visto il film in questione, potrai confrontare le tue aspettative con le tue effettive reazioni, prendendo qualche appunto, se vuoi, nell'ultima colonna. Sarai così in grado di giudicare in che misura il film ha corrisposto alle tue aspettative o le ha invece contraddette. (Ovviamente  questa esperienza sarà più interessante se potrai confrontare le tue osservazioni con quelle di altri!)

Discovering expectations

At the cinema, the film is the same. It's you who are different.

When we are about to watch a movie, we activate, more or less consciously, several expectations, on the basis of our knowledge, experiences, beliefs and attitudes. The expectations, and the reactions they trigger during and after watching the film, are largely responsible for the opinion we form about the film, of the interpretation we provide and of the judgment we can express on the film itself. Expectations are a shared as well as a strictly personal factor:

- shared, because many other people who belong to our same culture, age, social situation, or profession - as well as people that somehow share with us important aspects of our life - tend to have a similar store of knowledge and experiences; but at the same time

- personal, because, as unique human beings, each of us exhibits individual differences and experiences which belong to no one else.

Let's try and see how these processes work in practice. Think of a film you would like to see in the near future. In the Worksheet below, fill in, in as much detail as you can, the Factors to consider column. Then, on the basis of this data, write in the next column the Expectations that your mind will generate. For example, if you are going to see the latest Woody Allen comedy, you can write in the Expectations column something like ... one or more characters going through an "existential crisis", or an uninterrupted series of gags, or the setting in a famous city or ... To make another example, if your friends have recommended a certain film and have told you what it's about, you can briefly summarize what you already know. Or, if you are going to see a horror film, you can list some elements that you expect you will see: a group of friends gradually murdered as the story unfolds, torture scenes, a bloodshed ("splatter"), and so on.

Once you have filled in the Worksheet, and after watching the film in question, you can compare your expectations with your actual reactions, making some notes, if you feel like it, in the last column. You will thus be able to evaluate how far the film has met your expectations or has rather gone against them. (Obviously this experience will be more interesting if you can compare your remarks with those of others!)
